last weekend i turned 37, and had myself a lovely time. Jean was in town for work so she was able to be with us for the weekend.
Saturday morning started with a yummy breakfast from my baby, and we chatted about what a pain it is to plan our wedding. Andrew our landlord was fixing the door while we ate, and because he recently got married, he was trying to instill some reality in our plans. i.e. apparently it’s not possible to have a wedding for 100 people for $5k.
then we skipped across the street to City College of SF for our first class of “Latin Folk Dance”. it’s a 2 hour class for 15 weeks for only $45! can’t beat that. more importantly, the teacher is great and goes very slowly, assuming that everyone is learning from scratch. i’ve learned that the ‘free’ classes offered at salsa clubs spend like 10 minutes on the basics before they move on to harder stuff. anyways, in 2 weeks we’ve already learned the basic Cha Cha, Merengue, and Salsa steps.
after class, while walking along Valencia we happened to come across a day-long silent meditation workshop…and we’d just been talking to people about doing a silent meditation retreat (Amo much more seriously than I).
then we hit up Salvation Army to look for a loveseat and armchair, but found nothing.
then we met up with Jean and had a yummy lunch at Foreign Cinema (our first time there).
then we went home and chilled a bit, before heading out for my birthday dinner @ Bruno’s where i ate and drank too much. Frank and Grace were there, albeit on a “diet” that involved passing on the appetizers and then eating huge entrees.

Sunday was my actual birthday, and we spent most of the day running around to furniture shops looking for them chairs. that night, Jon and Yvette surprised us with a visit and cake and gifts. very nice of them.
all in all, i couldn’t have asked for a better way to continue my old age.
sold the Wii today. it was the ultimate party system, but the only game worth playing was tennis. it’s been shelved during in favor of the new party champ, Rock Band. if it weren’t for that game, i’d toss my 360, too.
also dumped the HD-DVD drive for the 360. BluRay is going to beat it, but even that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll success. physical media may be on the way out with all the VOD options available becoming available everywhere you turn…like say, iTunes (HD rentals available in Feb).
phones have been able to browse the web for years, but it’s never really translated into a usable comparison shopping tool. iphone + amazon though, is a pretty killer combo:
say i’m at bestbuy and see a printer i’m interested in. it looks like a good price with the right features, but i really have no clue. in about a minute i can pull up amazon for iphone, search for it, do a quick price check (they’re usually a whole lot cheaper), and read customer reviews (super helpful).
if i decide to buy it online, 1-Click ordering will place the order with my default credit card and ship to my default address. then there’s amazon prime for free 2-day shipping on most items, and they don’t charge tax.
so i get it cheaper, delivered straight to my home, and tax free. not bad.
the techie crowd is abuzz about how the macbook air is missing this and that feature, and how too much was sacrificed in the name of thinness (
MacBook Air recommendation: 10 reasons to wait - computerworld). they’re missing the point. normal people don’t care that the battery is sealed, that you can’t upgrade the harddrive or memory, or that it doesn’t have firewire or pc-card slots. it’s pretty safe to say that the pc-world generally doesn’t get elegance and minimalism in technology. technology that draws reactions like this:
