the first digital camera

personal things, technology | Friday, April 7th, 2006

i had this camera! as soon as it came out, i wrote a work justification for it and they bought it for me. i was working at LSI (chip manufacturer) and i said we needed it to take pictures of the cleanroom equipment and layout to make it easier to communicate. ah, those 640×480 pictures…that’s 0.3 megapixels.

boot camp: day 1

technology | Thursday, April 6th, 2006

reformatted my macbook drive to erase the onmac XP hack; installed Apple Boot Camp so it dual boots to windows xp. then restored my mac image that i had backed up with superduper.

xp is working like a charm. as documented, a few things don’t work like isight, infrared, etc. but video drivers seem fine. installing all the *49* xp updates now…talk about an OS with problems. =)

my xp partition is 15gb, formatted as FAT so that OS X can write to it. NTFS is read-only for Macs.

a quiet anniversary for Apple

so Apple’s 30th anniversary came and went last Saturday, 4/1/06. not a peep out of the company. rather odd, since Jobs himself mentioned the date in his last keynote speech, leading to lots of speculation that there’d be some grand product announcement(s) around this time. but there was nothing. not even a press release about the significance of the day.

weird. maybe it’s just taking a little longer than expected to get the next crop of products out. a revised ibook is expected (probably called ‘macbook’), and of course, the video ipod (which requires deals with all the movie studios to be in place). an apple phone is also supposedly in the works, though not until later this year or maybe even next.

on a related note: today Apple announced Boot Camp, which is their official support for enabling Intel Macs to dual-boot into Windows XP. though those 2 hackers won $14k for their solution, theirs didn’t have drivers (notably, the video drivers were missing). Apple’s does! so PC games will now play on Intel Macs…this is a *big* deal.
