day off

media, news, society, personal things | Friday, December 16th, 2005

i’m off work today, had to use up 3 ‘floating holidays’ at work that i can’t carry over into the new year. i wrote previously about how much vacation time i had left to use this year. i had planned on a 2 wk vacation to shanghai to visit the folks, but decided to cancel that because things are so busy at work. so now i’m carrying 11 days vacation into the new year.

it’s pretty annoying, because last year i also carried over 5 days vacation that i couldn’t use because things were too busy at work. essentially, it’s been stated that our ‘busy times’ are the summer and December and that we should be ‘mindful’ of that. so i guess we’re supposed to take vacations when everyone else doesn’t.

but i guess i shouldn’t complain…i’ve only been there 2 yrs, and now with the carryover, i’ve got *32* days to use in ‘06 (26 vacation + 3 personal + 3 floating holidays). over 6 weeks off.

today was also howard’s big last day. i didn’t go…it’s my day off, i didn’t want to get up at 7am to go stand in the middle of a huge crowd. and yahoo had live streaming coverage, anyway. plus there was the uncertainty of the transit strike - the new deadline is Monday at midnight when the subways might shut down.

i just cancelled my american express delta skymiles card, which i’ve had for over 15 years. got it in college. they should ban credit card companies from college campuses. or better yet, teach fiscal responsibility somewhere along the line in all those wasted hours in the classroom. i’m embarrassed to say that there was a time when i was literally paying hundreds of dollars a month in finance charges. now i’m down to 3 credit cards with balances on them, and 2 of those have fixed 5-6% interest rates. the one with a normal 14% rate is my citi home rebate card that applys 1% of purchases to my mortgage. so i feel ok with the balances i carry these days.

Last days of Howard Stern (on regular radio)

media, news, society | Thursday, December 15th, 2005

tomorrow is howard’s last day at WXRK in NYC. he started there over 20 years ago…November 18, 1985 to be exact. i was just starting my sophomore year in high school. i remember hearing him earlier though, likely when he was on WNBC in NY (since ‘82). he started in radio after graduating BU in ‘76.

i want to go see his final show tomorrow (it’s a big outdoor fan-appreciation thing) but the potential transit strike could put a halt to the whole thing…

Last days of Howard Stern - Radio - MSNBC.com

“I found out about 9/11 from Howard Stern. I was getting ready for work, listening to the Stern gang discuss Pamela Anderson’s breasts, when the tone changed. From their Manhattan studio, they cold see that the World Trade Center was on fire. I thought it was a bit, some kind of joke. But the punch line never came. I turned on the TV and saw it too, the Twin Towers burning seven miles south of my apartment.

You hardly ever read this kind of stuff about Stern, but it’s a big part of the reason Stern imitators fail when they ape the naughty talk and toilet humor. That morning, hearing news that makes you want to be with people, I felt that I was. I, along with millions of other listeners in New York City and the rest of the country, got our information via the humanity Stern projects that lesser DJs cannot.

Stern and crew stayed on the air, discussing the unfolding tragedy, relaying information as they got it. Unlike other broadcasters who fled the city, Stern and crew were on the air that day and the next, taking calls, talking to listeners, a consistent presence in an uncertain time.”
