i’m on a conference call at work right now (not really paying attention) and was thinking about the neat technologies at work, all connected through my thinkpad laptop:

* skype: though it’s a telephone conference call, rather than use my desk phone (and holding the handset for an hour and cramping my neck), i’m calling in through my personal skype account. skype charges money for calling computer-to-phone, but at 2 cents/minute, it’s still practically free. the call quality is crystal clear, i hear the audio in stereo through headphones, and my hands are free.

* NetMeeting: built-into Windows XP/2000, you can always count on everyone having it pre-installed. i connect to the mtg host’s pc, and a window pops open displaying his screen so i can follow along.

* AIM: while the mtg is going on, i can use AOL instant messenger to have one-on-one side conversations with participants, like saying “what the hell are they talking about?!”
all this technology at work, all these ways of communicating, and i still can’t manage to pay attention…
thanksgiving @ the lupoli’s
it was a whirlwind family experience this thanksgiving. jean & jason flew in from LA on Thurs night and stayed with me thru Sat (a tight fit with 4 people and 2 cats…but fun!)
for thanksgiving dinner, i went with them and my bro to my uncle’s house in Ft. Lee and spent time with “dad’s side” of the family. unfortunately, amo had to be in boston for a family emergency and they didn’t get to meet her.
on Fri night, i hosted my first mini-family gathering at my apartment: amo, jean & jason, dave, danny, daniel, jan & rosemarie. it was a mostly kids affair (except for j&r) and a lot of fun. we played video games, watched movies, played poker, and topped it off by going to Fat Cat to play pool & ping pong.
and then on Sat the eating continued with both lunch & dinner at the Lupoli’s in Whitestone. again, lots of eating, talking, lounging, and more eating.
overall, a great family weekend. it was especially nice for my baby to spend quality time with my family and winning them over even more than before.
i don’t know what it is about them, but i cannot stand these characters. i don’t think the writers intentionally make them hateable, but they’re just so one dimensional, you just want them to die, die, die.
* Teri & Kim Bauer, from “24″ (Leslie Hope & Elisha Cuthbert)

* Michael from “Lost” (Michael Dawson)

the idea sounds stupid, but it’s actually pretty interesting:
“smspeeping.com displays real text messages sent to mobile phone users. All messages are shown with the permission of the sender.”
SMS Peeping.com
i like this one:
i typed in askjeeves _how to suck dick with a tongue ring?_ and it came up
i found it by installing the “sms 2.0″ widget for apple’s dashboard. i wonder how many other sms apps link to that site. i gave it my permission to put my messages up. =)
here’s my new system of the week: using Gmail to implement GTD (David Allen’s ‘getting things done’ process).
space-age wasteland GTD with Gmail Whitepaper
gmail is a good place to do this because
- it’s almost always open in my browser
- accessible from anywhere (mac, pc, other side of the world)
- virtually unlimited storage space
- easily searchable
i’ve been using Gmail “drafts” as a notepad, since you can go in and edit the contents and then click “save now”. but this GTD plan goes way beyond that…we’ll see how it goes.
