get john’s job

media, news, society | Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

stuttering john was lured away from the howard stern show to work for jay leno on the tonight show. so for the past 10 weeks, howard’s had 10 show regulars compete for the job opening, one person per week - and it’s been hilarious. they created some great bits. anyways, my vote goes to Richard Christy because most of the other guys have annoying overbearing personalities, and his song paradies are absolutely hilarious.

vote for “get john’s job”

new digital camera

technology | Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

my tiny sony dsc-u20 digital camera is gettin a little dated. small as it is, it’s got no zoom and picture quality isn’t the greatest (though it’s amazing that it gets 2 megapixels). it does fine for quick snapshots and it’s managed to survive a lot - from the dusty playa of burning man last year to this weekend’s PVD concert where it got soaked in the rain.

but for BM this year i wanna take a step up. i decided on the Cyber-shot DSC-W1. like others in it’s class it’s got 5 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, but a other things swayed me. like the 30fps VGA movie-mode - this is essentially camcorder quality video. and it can use standard AA batteries (proprietary batteries have to be charged from an outlet - kinda difficult to do on the playa). i started out looking at Canons (i think the picture quality is better), but their video mode isn’t nearly as good and that’s as important to me as picture quality.

i also got a Sony DPP-EX50 Digital Photo Printer since there’s a $50 rebate if you buy it with a sony digital camera. prints out great looking 4×6 photos.

and finally, i just wanna say that after a lot of searching for the best prices (ebay, amazon, local reatailers, etc), dell came out on top ($50 cheaper than the others). they had a 15% sale on cameras, and combined with no tax and free shipping, they can’t be touched. the direct sale model rocks.

** update: dell *rocks*. i placed my order at 12pm, and it was shipped at 4pm!

fun weekend

on friday night we went to see paul van dyk spin in central park (pics). it starts POURING rain on the cab ride there…at first it was sad and annoying, but once we got there the music and vibe took over as everyone danced their asses off for the 4.5 hour set.

on sunday i took *a* and *e* on the turntables on the hudson boat party (pics). the weather was *beautiful* and we had a super-fun time. the dj’s spun great house / latin / reggae / world music as we cruised around manhattan from afternoon to sunset to evening.

some cool little hacks, from sarah lane’s blog:

1. Pop Goes the Gmail - Route Gmail through your favorite POP3 client

2. G-Tray - Getting tired of logging in over and over? Add a systray notification app and log in automatically when you’ve got new msgs

3. GML- Import days, months, or years of email archives into Gmail- multiple clients and OS’s supported

4. G-Mailto- Make mailto: links auto-open in Gmail.
