packing

personal things | Tuesday, June 24th, 2003

i started packing today. though i’ve moved many times before (about 10 times in the 10 years i’ve been in the bay area), this time it’s a little different. every other time i had a new place lined up and knew exactly where i was going. this time, i’m just sorta gonna be wandering between LA, SF, and NYC. also, i’m feeling kinda melancholy cuz i met some really cool people recently (Cynthia & Amy) and i really wanna hang out with them some more (even though they’re a bad influence on me).

and i’m gonna miss the hell out of this loft…it’s only been a year here, but it’s been fun as heck. the karaoke has been a blast (thanks to Ali for getting me a karaoke machine for Xmas). i’ll miss my complimentary super-deluxe DIRECTV package that they were nice enough to allow ex-employees to keep through the end of the year. and my Tivo, how i’ll miss it…nothing makes me happier than being able to watch an episode of Seinfeld anytime i want. but i really do need to get out of stumbling distance from 1015 and the EndUp, cuz that’s just been bad news…

i have 39 cans of tuna, and 24 cans of V-8, and i’m gonna finish ‘em ALL before i move 4 days from now!! watch out, if you’re within smelling distance of my breath…

recovering

personal things | Monday, June 23rd, 2003

uggghhh…..
still trying to recover from last night. the big party night for paul van dyk @ 1015 was definitely fun, though my memory of the night’s events aren’t exactly crystal clear. i remember pounding RBV’s to start the evening, going to 1015 and leaving my apartment in the safekeeping of 6 drunk people belting out the karaoke, and then the madhouse inside 1015. our group was scattered throughout the club, and for some reason i kept trying to get everyone together in one big group. didn’t work. PVD was on from about 12:30-4:30a, then went home for a pit stop (ok, a 2-1/2 hour pitstop), and finally, bright and early, off to the EndUp.

oh yeah, i actually got to party with Diana, and old family “reunion” friend. our dad’s went to high school together in taiwan and every summer they have a reunion both on the east coast and west coast. i’m an east coaster, but starting about high school i got to know the west coasters. Diana was always the baby of the group, so it was kinda weird partyin with her (esp. now that she’s a looker and turnin all the boys’ heads)…but ya know what, she is down with it. anyone who appreciates good dj’s is ok in my book. plus, she’s gonna show me the LA scene.

i posted a few random party pics for this month.

random rants
sometimes people say, “you don’t work any more…what DO you do?” well, i’ll tell ya what i do…nothing. it’s not as easy as it sounds. you have to be careful, because the idea of doing anything can easily lead to doing something that would stop me from doing nothing, and that would force me to drop everything.
[blatantly stolen from jerry seinfeld]

it’s embarrassing, but i admit it - i’m addicted to Safeway sushi. i go to Safeway all the time, since it’s right next to my gym in Potrero Center. it’s not as bad as it sounds. they’ve got their own sushi chef (i think he’s actually japanese) who’ll make stuff right in front of you, and everything that’s in containers is date-stamped so you know it was made that day. they even have the little cat statues that are in all the sushi places. how authentic.

i’ve been playing a cracked version of Unreal Tournament 2003 for a few months now, and was actually going to buy an official copy just so i could play it online and get slaughtered by all the kids out there. when you go online, it sends the serial number to the game publisher’s servers, so if you have a cracked version you can’t play. once again, hackers come to the rescue. the unreal4all effort has developed a client/server hack that bypasses all that legal crap so we can all play! i’m still kinda scared to go online though, cuz those kids whip my ass.

the color sidekick is out, but it’ll cost me $300 to upgrade from my black & white model. i can wait. i LOVE my sidekick, though it’s a bit bulky. when i need something slimmer (say, to take in a club), i pop out the SIM card and put it in my Sony T68i. god bless GSM phones.

come to think of it, hackers saved the day with my T68i, too. the GSM carriers “lock” their phones to their network, so when i bought my T68i (used, off craigslist, like half the things i own) it was locked to AT&T and wouldn’t work on T-mobile (even though the phone itself was totally compatible). those bastards. anyways, i found a friendly guy on (surprise) craigslist who re-programmed the firmware (for a nominal fee, of course) so i can use it on any GSM network (with the right SIM card, of course). (i need to learn to write without using so many parentheses)

i’m gonna start studying for the PMP (Project Management Professional) certification exam. it costs frickin’ $500 to take, but i need every advantage possible in this job market. probably should have started this, oh, say 6 months ago, but that would’ve meant doing something, which would’ve interfered with my doing nothing…

gamespot
when we were waiting in line outside Tiesto last Friday, i met 2 cool people (Dave & Amy) who work at gamespot.com (probably the best video game site there is). they hooked me up with a free gamespot complete account! it’s normally like $25/yr i think, and gives you access to all kinds of preview videos of upcoming games. i watched clips of halo 2 and half-life 2 and they are f’in unbelievable! along with doom 3, these games are gonna usher in a whole new level of realistic physics in gameplaying.

i don’t really play games that much, though…seriously…i get em for the eye candy, but i’ve hardly ever actually finished an entire game. the only one in recent years has been halo.

loser in the gym

personal things | Wednesday, June 11th, 2003

at the gym today…
so this guy is hitting on this chick while i’m working out. she’s busy doing her crunches, and he’s standing over her trying to have a conversation, oblivious to the fact that she’s working out. i had to eavesdrop - i love watching guys make fools of themselves. like the “squeeze in” guy on the dance floor that tries to work his way into a group of girls that are so obviously trying to keep him out. anyways, he’s all peppering her with questions, she says she’s a student, and he’s like “ya know, only 1% of all humanity even has a bachelor’s degree. you’re a genius!” no wonder i’m still single - Rico Suave’s like this guy are stealing all the women.

and then in the locker room, my recurring nightmare was realized again…having to squeeze into the corner to my locker, which, no matter how large the locker room is, is always right next to the big hairy guy that just pulled down his pants and is bending over to take off his underwear.

woohoo! netflix just sent me “a bug’s life”. after “finding nemo” i had to catch the rest of the pixar movies. after this one, i’ve seen em all!
