RIM just had their best quarter ever, and they thanked the iPhone for bringing the spotlight onto smartphones in general. it’s the proper b-school response to your competitors: publicly thank them for legitimizing your space.

while that may truly be the case in the short term, over the next few quarters it will give way to a more sobering reality: the iPhone is going to seriously steal marketshare from them. here’s a choice quote from an article describing just that:

“BlackBerry is currently the front-runner in the consumer smartphone market in part because it met the criteria for success in this market and in part because its competitors until quite recently were simply inept,”
